Recommended Books on Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Myeloid Leukemia: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine) A panel of internationally recognized research scientists and clinical investigators brings together a diverse collection of readily reproducible methods for identifying and quantifying a large number of specific genetic abnormalities associated with the broad spectrum of myeloid malignancies. Highlights include techniques for the detection of BCR-ABL mutations and resistance to imatinib mesylate, detection of the FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion in idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome and chronic eosinophilic leukemia, classification of AML by DNA-oligonucleotide microarrays, and detection of the V617F JAK2 mutation in myeloproliferative disorders. In addition to gene rearrangments, other prognostically relevant molecular lesions such as FLT3 mutations and WT-1 overexpression are covered.
Acute Leukemias IX Acute Leukemias IX provides an extended and thorough overview of recent developments in cell biology and experimental therapy for acute leukemias. Following the tradition of the Acute Leukemias series since 1987, this book bridges the gap between basic research and clinical studies and emphasizes that both aspects are equally necessary to achieve improvements, not only in understanding the disease but also in providing better therapy. As a forum for world-wide activities in the field of acute leukemias the volume contains invaluable contributions that provide the reader with new, previously unpublished information.

Myelodysplastic Syndromes & Secondary Acute Myelogenus Leukemia: Directions for the New Millennium (Cancer Treatment and Research) Myelodysplastic syndromes are to the bone marrow what pneumonia is to the lungs; the response of an organ to a variety of etiologic insults like aging, toxic exposure, infections and auto-immunity. Among infectious causes alone, pneumonia could be the result of a variety of possible pathogens including bacterial, viral, tuberculous or fungal agents. Similarly, MDS cannot be treated as a single disease. Attempts to harness the inherent complexity of MDS by devising `classifications' which group the various syndromes as one disease is as misguided as saying that a pneumonia is not infectious because it did not respond to antibiotics. Progress in the field will occur faster when we re-analyze this premise. Therefore, until a clearer picture of the disease emerges it is best to treat each of the MDS syndromes as a separate entity. Having no classification is better than a misleading one. Cancer research has been notable for its periodic cycles of promise and hope, followed by defeat and disappointments. It is not that there is no solution, but that the problem has not been identified precisely. This book is our attempt to define the most crucial questions related to MDS that need to be addressed immediately through logic, analysis and rigorous experimentation. If the emerging problems appear daunting, then instead of being overwhelmed by them, we should follow the advice of the great 20th century thinker Antonio Gramsci, `pessimism of the intellect must be faced with the optimism of will'.
Lotus in the Fire In 1995, Jim Bedard, a martial artist and Zen student, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and given ten days to live. This is the story of how he used his spiritual strength to bring himself into full contact with a death sentence as well as with painful medical treatment, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. It is also the inspiring story of how the faith of his family, Zen teacher, close friends, and the Buddhist community helped him. Bedard's story introduces us to Zen practices that can help us cope with emotional turmoil and physical pain. His words on compassion, on karma, on gratitude, on impermanence and the inevitability of death—all from a nonsmoking, meditating, aerobically fit vegetarian who became suddenly and "terminally" ill—are inspiring and sometimes funny. He explores, too, the fundamental question of suffering, its cause, and how the teachings of karma can help us accept illness, ultimately using it as an opportunity to deepen our spiritual lives.

Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (Contemporary Hematology)
Acute Myelogenous Leukemia is a timely compilation of new concepts in the molecular pathogenesis and molecular therapy of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). The focus is on selected critical molecular determinants of AML pathogenesis and pathophysiology and the exploitation of these factors by diverse therapeutic agents and modalities. Bringing together new concepts and findings in the basic and clinical science of AML, the book emphasizes the molecular basis for new therapies that stand to have the greatest potential impact on the clinical face of these diseases. The text provides insights into selected novel strategies currently and prospectively being developed, including interruption of specific signal transduction pathways, modulation of gene expression, attempts to reinstate differentiation, and immunomodulation. There is an emphasis throughout on the bidirectional flow of knowledge between the clinical and laboratory arenas, and both basic and clinical scientists will benefit from this translational text.
Only Spring: On Mourning the Death of My Son The loss of a child is every parent's worst fear. Gordon Livingston survived that tragedy not once but twice, in successive years. Only Spring, crafted from his journal, traces his son Lucas's courageous battle with leukemia, his extraordinary gift of love, and Livingston's own cycle of faith lost and hope regained. This edition includes a new epilogue by the author.
